This first part of this latest report from the Kaspersky Virus Lab examines the evolution of malware for mobile devices

At the beginning of 2006, writers of malicious code for mobile devices showed increased activity, they released a whole range of new malicious programs for mobile phones.

Today one of our users told us about a particular program which has been placed on a popular Russian mobile phone site. This program is allegedly designed to ‘steal money from mobile operators’.

The first quarter of 2006 marks a turning point in mobile malware development. The era of quantitative development, with its numerous, but primitive Trojans for Symbian OS has ended.

In the majority of European countries it’s possible to buy a mobile phone for very little money. In effect, the cost of the handset is subsidized by the service provider. However, in many cases, the phone will only work on a specified network.
